The Method is the Message
As the discourse around art+design research methodologies continues to develop, it brings a possible shift in the exchange of perspectives between CP Snow's 'two cultures'. Whereas previously creative research discourse was often preoccupied with how to protect practice-based knowledge pursuits from a perceived need to adopt the evidence-based epistemologies that underpin science, the field has begun to solidify terms for its own discourse, and these new achievements have the potential to influence scientific knowledge traditions. This paper will explore, through several key works of contemporary practice, some ways in which art+design can manifest knowledge. Critically, the paper will show how creative research cultures have a distinct epistemological stance that demands a continual reticulation of methodological approaches; this is a key point of difference and potential influence. The paper concludes with an invocation for increased exchange toward a more relational understanding of the world in the face of urgent challenges.
