Morphology Observation of Paint Top Surface

 

Physical structure of different paint medium on two surfaces has been evaluated with the aid of optical/laser microscopy techniques. Both water-based and oil-based paints were applied on canvas pre-gesso pad and acetate clear sheets. Optical experiments were applied when the paint was completely dried. OLS4000 microscope was used, which is designed for precise level imaging, 3D measurement and roughness measurement with different magnifications. The aim of this work is to illustrate the surface morphology of paint top surface and to study the interaction of paint when applied in layers. Up to three layers of acrylic and oil paint were used for the experiment. The interaction between acrylic-acrylic, oil-oil, and oil-acrylic is also studied. The optical microscope gives us the opportunity to record 3D image of the surface as well as registering the color of the sample. Studying the interaction of different colors and illustrating their behavior in microscales after drying is also considered in this work.

Atoosa Maleki was born in Tehran. After earning her PhD, she worked as a research scientist at the University of Oslo (UiO) in Norway for four years. During that period, she was involved with different projects in collaboration with the Biology and Pharmacy departments and supervised graduate and doctorate students. Her main research was in the field of biopolymers and their application in drug delivery. Following her passion for art, Maleki enrolled in the undergraduate Painting/Drawing Program at California College of the Arts (CCA) in 2013, where she was introduced to and engaged with various art-science projects and became interested in combining her expertise in science with art. Maleki received the All-College Honors award in Painting in 2015. Maleki earned her BSc in polymer engineering at Amirkabir University of Technology (Tehran Polytechnic) and continued her studies in polymer-chemistry at the University of Oslo (UiO) in Norway.
