Coal Mining and Alchemy
My recent work has been made in response to years of research into alchemical philosophy combined with site visits to the Pennsylvania Coal region. This work intends to address the environmental and public health issues that mining has on our planet. The town of Centralia, PA is a focal point of these works- a town that has been condemned for decades due to a coal fire burning beneath. This work addresses the massive displacement of land caused by mining as well as the impact it has on the population of surrounding areas.

Born in Philadelphia, Rebecca Hall is a multimedia artist based in San Francisco. Her recent work focuses on social and environmental issues surrounding Pennsylvania’s coal region and its long-term implications. Informed by alchemy, astronomy, and geology, she creates works that reflect the current clash between natural and synthetic worlds. She received her BA in Art, Design and Media from Richmond, the American International University in London, and is currently a second-year MFA candidate at California College of the Arts.
