Harmonographic Experimentation
A Harmonograph is an automatic drawing apparatus that draws/diagrams complex geometric images of musical harmonic patterns, linking the senses of sight and sound. This scientific instrument employs pendulums, which can be set to oscillate at different frequencies allowing for an infinite variety of fascinating images to emerge. Serving as an iconic and inspirational kinetic sculpture for the symposium, the Harmonograph will also serve as a hands-on learning tool for creative investigation of scientific principals. The Harmonograph will be accessible to the CCA community during the exhibition and symposium, and students will create projects based on the principles demonstrated by the Harmonograph as part of their fall classes. The Harmonograph demonstrates the intersection of science, art and design techniques such as image making, musical diagrams, kinetics, physics and time-based interaction.

Seth Augustine is a visual artist whose artwork, installations, and exhibitions focus on cross-disciplinary collaboration, cultural exchange, and community engagement. Through his travels and pursuits, he has developed projects that have empowered underserved communities through hands-on workshops, interactive events, and creative exhibitions both nationally and abroad. Seth earned his BFA from Cornell University and his MFA from the University of California, San Diego.

Christina La Sala is a scavenger, collector, researcher, and fabricator. Installation based, her work is driven by a love of history and craft. Born in Philadelphia, she received her BFA from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University and her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. She has shown her work nationally and abroad as an installation artist and as a production designer. She divides her exhibition time between gallery work, film, and theatre design. She is the chair of the Individualized Program at the California College of the Arts, where she has been teaching since 2002.
