Embodied Research
In consultation with visual neuroscience and cognitive AI researchers, I have spent the last four years coordinating performances and experiential artworks in which either myself or viewers enact existing scientific hypotheses of perception, reasoning, and the self.
In “Embodied Research” I will look at various contemporary empirical studies that complicate the colloquial understanding of rational intelligence and omniscient perception. Following this, I will present artworks of mine that exemplify alternative learning structures for the understanding of complex scientific concepts. Finally, I will propose how embodied and experiential artworks can be considered legitimate evaluations of popular scientific ideologies.
Artist
Zoe McCloskey is a conceptual and performance artist who engages in collective and science-informed art. Her recent work evaluates the dynamics of operation between the emotional and the rational, as they play out both in contemporary culture and within the biological individual.
McCloskey has collaborated on many international artworks, both as a founding member of the international artist collective Locurativo and in recent years under the name Interrrational (a collaboration with Norwegian choreographer Magnhild Fossum). McCloskey’s work has been featured in SciArt in America and has appeared in the NYT Design Blog. McCloskey has lectured at Stanford University, the Cyberpunk Apocalypse Writers Collective, Marwen Foundation for Arts, and Corner College and has served on panel discussions at Columbia College of Art and California College of the Arts. She holds an MFA in Social Practice from California College of the Arts and a BFA from Cooper Union.
