SCULPTURE 1 will introduce you to traditional and unconventional sculpture materials, tools, and concepts as you begin to study and experiment with the production of meaning. Think of this class as a laboratory in which you will expand your pre-conceived notions of ‘sculpture’. You will become familiar with woodworking, power tools, as well as more unconventional materials and sculptural approaches. Projects will be supplemented with readings, field trips, guest lectures, digital presentations, in-class discussions, critiques, and individual meetings –which will all facilitate the integration of studio assignments with a deeper understanding of art history and current art affairs. During the semester you will be exposed to a wealth of new images, ideas, and basic techniques. Invention and imagination on your part are required as is your ability to take initiative in beginning to uncover those areas of exploration that most deeply impact you and capture your imagination.

 

As an EcoTap based class, Sculpture 1 will explore a sculptural practice rooted in a conscious engagement with our environment at large. As material artists, we will look at our carbon footprint, inventive solutions, recycled and found materials, toxic materials and processes, and the chemical composition of materials and their impact to our fragile ecosystem. This class will still have a hands-on studio component, utilizing both traditional and unexpected materials to create works that are metaphors for experiencing today’s world. We will focus on a more inclusive definition of sculpture as a broad discipline, crossing over a wide range of mediums and dealing with a variety of issues–the environmental, personal, spiritual, humorous, poetic, formal, social, and political. In addition we will have field trips to SF Recolory, The Exploratorium where we will see a piece by artist Tim Hawkinson and more.
