The class comprises projects and activities arranged around lectures, presentations and videos.  Field trips and guest lectures supplement the class material.  The objective of the class is for students to understand principles and language of sustainability; to become familiar with lifecycle impacts of textiles and the fashion system and to use these points as opportunities or departure points for innovation/sustainable design strategies; the class will look critically at the consumer culture in which fashion designers practice and explore new roles for design that are relevant to our times.  Students will learn how to research independently, how to identify sources for reliable data, organize, edit and communicate complex information succinctly, and how to use this research discursively to inform, direct and re-form design practice.  This class helps students to develop their own sustainability philosophy and is a requirement for Design 4: Sustainability Studio.
